John Stuart Mill
Treatment of Animals (Is animal testing ethical? Is eating meat ethical?)
Why should we not test on animals or eat meat? Thanks to animal testing amazing breakthroughs in medicine and in technology have been made. Should we not strive to improve our way of living even if it costs the lives of a few animals? Us utilitarians believe that if the consequences for an action even if they are unmoral are for a greater good then it is ok. Sacrificing a few animals for the sake of man kind seems like a small price to pay. Would people rather drugs be tested on humans? The repercussions of this would be far worse. Say the drug has terrible side effects and that person becomes deformed and can no longer live a normal life, would that be moral? All that could have been prevented simply by testing on dogs for example. If something goes wrong you simply put the dog to rest and no family loses a husband, brother or son. An animal won’t have a family missing him, or won’t lose its ability to function properly because these animals are bred in labs and they don’t even need to feed themselves. Basically would you rather test a drug that one day might cure AIDS on your pet or on your son.
I agree with Alejandro, although experimenting with seems unjust and evil, it is being done for the benefit of human beings and not to hurt animals. By killing one animal in drug test could sve thousands of humans.
ReplyDeleteI do agree as in what Alejandro is saying, animals are a part of nature which they are considered objects that are considered for us in need for us to survive and test onto to help us get through life and find out through science by testing on objects to help the human race.
