“It Depends”
Death penalty is a much debated subject in our society. Is ethical for the state to kill a human being? Is it more ethical than to have him locked for the rest of his or her life? Existentialism teaches that as long as we are true to ourselves we are being ethical yet it is very complicated to answer the question above. First let’s see the world, the United States is a very powerful and rich country this could be believed to be an example of a civilized society. The United States is civilized and yet we see many people suffer the death penalty. Is the United States being true to itself? No how can they be civilized and yet kill a person. Therefore the country is being unethical. But is death penalty ethical? “It depends”. As an example we have two inmates waiting to suffer the death penalty the first is a white collar banker who launders the money used by crime organizations this is rich, has a beautiful house and is seen as a descent member of society. The second is a criminal a serial killer who suffers from mental illness and feels as if he must kill again and again. It would unethical to execute the serial killer as he is true to himself; it would be unethical to kill a person for being who he or she is. It would be ethical to execute the banker as he is not being constant with himself. So in theory death penalty can be both ethical and unethical it depends on the reasons the person is to be executed and whether or not the person was true to him or herself.
