MAKE LOVE NOT WAR

John Stuart Mill

War (Is war Ethical? What are the ethics in war?)

I John Stuart Mill oppose to the idea of War except in the outmost extreme cases. War is an undesirable act for society as a whole; I and other utilitarians condemn this act. War causes more harm than good therefore I cannot accept this, I strongly believe in the “Greatest Happiness Principle”. War creates sorrow, sorrow breads more war and we end up in a vicious cycle of never ending animosity. Despite the conviction of my beliefs I cannot help but accept that under certain circumstances war is necessary and unavoidable. That is when we are dealing with the eradication of a tyrant for example such as Hitler was or to overthrow an oppressive government. That would benefit society because under these circumstances we are we are restoring peace and balance to a community or even the entire world. In this case we utilitarians can’t just simply see which side would benefit society as a whole or even if the destruction of countries and people’s lives would give positive results. We must weigh the consequences of those acts. Even if we were to eradicate the worst oppressive regime there could be If we resort to nuclear warefare that would not be permissible and on the long run will affect human kind the nature of these acts.

  1. Disputes should be settled peacefully and humans should be able to use their capacity to settle dispute or arguments without violence but also a think war is not always sinful even tough war violates people’s right to live free of harm and respect
