Abortion: A serious ethical issue. (Jean Paul Sartre)

Should abortion be treated as the murder of a human, or should it remain legal and free of choice of the women? Abortion is a topic widely debated based on what is ethical. I, Jean Paul Sartre believe that abortion could be ethical and legal sometimes, but not always. As an existentialist, I believe that people have a freedom of choice, therefore they are free to decided whether or not they will kill the baby or not. Existentialists believe that every human being is free and that they can take their own decisions, but they also have to accept the consequences that come along with the decision they took. A fetus is a person; therefore abortion is considered a murder. Even though the fetus is not a person, people don’t have the right to kill the baby. It all depends on the agent’s decision. Abortion is definitely unethical, due to the fact that you are killing a human being, but nobody can force women to carry an unwanted baby. Abortion is a quiet controversial topic. Talking about abortion as a general view, I believe that it is unethical, because it is consider a murder. It can only be ethical if the mother considers the baby a product of an unwanted sexual relationship and she knows that the baby will not be happy. The decision is given to the agent, and she is free to choose whatever she thinks is better for her and then she can take responsibility of her actions. It is not ethical to force the birth of children who are unwanted and cannot be care for, so in this case abortion is totally legal and ethical. Women who choose to abort when they are conscious that they will not be good mothers are making the most ethical decision. Existentialists also believe in consciousness when the agent is making a rational decision. I strongly believe that the fetus has a right to life, but so as the mother of freedom of choice and the fetus can’t make a decision, so the mother or the agent has to make it. It is unethical because the fetus is an innocent human being and the responsibility is of the mother, but a fetus has no ability to reason, think, it’s unconscious and has no self-awareness, therefore the agent is in total right to abort the baby. I strongly believe that human beings have the ultimate choice in everything, and that we always have the option of life and death.

  1. Dear Thomas Aquinas,

Throughout your letter I found out that we share very similar beliefs for the topic we were addressed with. As you said, and as I restated in my response, the aftermath of our wrongdoing should be treated separately from the wrongdoing itself. We are humans, and we all deserve to live life. Righteousness is one of the pillars of Buddhism, and after reading your response I jump to conclusions and tell you that it is a huge coincidence we share in thought.

    Sincerely,

    Gautama
